If you know one person with Down syndrome… October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month and ECAC Staff Member, Terri Leyton, will share how having a child with Down syndrome has shaped her life. Terri will also share some things to know about individuals with Down syndrome and resources for families and professionals.

In honor of Dyslexia Awareness month, we’ll show ECAC’s video, “Dyslexia in NC Schools,” and review other important information in our Dyslexia Tool Kit. Presented by Karen Laughlin, Parent Educator

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires each state to develop a state performance plan/annual performance report (SPP/APR) that evaluates the state’s efforts to implement the requirements and purposes of the IDEA and describes how the state will improve its implementation. The SPP/APRs include indicators that measure child and family outcomes and other indicators that measure compliance with the requirements

Families preparing for early childhood transitions – from one educational setting to another – can be experiencing any number of emotions from excitement to uncertainty. During this session, we will discuss the different parts of the transition process as well as how to prepare for these.

Join HOPE NC’s self-advocate Deja for a 1-on-1 discussion with another self-advocate, Kenneth Kealty, who has autism. Together they will discuss their independent living journey. This will be an inclusive conversation where everyone is encouraged to participate. 

We are planning a trip to visit our friends at Peacehaven Farms in Whitsett, NC. We plan to bring our lunches and have a picnic there with them. After we eat, we will enjoy some improv games, activities, and get a tour of the farm. Join us!!
