The Glossary of Behavioral Health Terms is a plain-language resource that explains common behavioral and mental health terms for youth and young adults transitioning to adult services. It defines terms such as mental health, coping, crisis, diagnosis, health insurance, Medicaid, psychiatric medications, disability accommodations, wellness services, and transition, each with an accessible definition and an example to help individuals better understand behavioral health concepts and the services available to them.

How to use

This glossary can be used by patients, families/caregivers, support staff, and mental health providers to build behavioral health literacy and to prepare for and participate in behavioral health appointments. It can help individuals understand unfamiliar mental health terms, build confidence in discussing behavioral health needs, and support participation in transition planning. The glossary can also be used alongside transition readiness activities, wellness planning, or discussions about accessing behavioral health services and supports.
