Join us for Community Care Conversations

We are so happy to invite you to a special dinner! AKALAKA and Duke Root Causes are hosting this event together, with help from Duke Campus Farm and The Penny Pilgram George Women’s Leadership Initiative at Duke University.

Menu by Harini Ilamurugu, a Duke Campus Farm student and local chef.

We are turning the Duke Integrative Medicine Center into a pop-up farm-to-table restaurant and spirit-free bar. Come share a space where we can:
Meet new people in a safe, welcoming place
Enjoy fresh, healthy food and fun drinks without alcohol
Talk about what “care” means through group activities

More Than a Meal: Our Broader Mission
At AKALAKA, we help people who give and need the greatest care. We connect care partners with a network of friends and support so they can enjoy life at home and in the community. By training people with disabilities and their loved ones, our goal is to turn the hard, unpaid work of care into a respected, paying job.

This dinner is a live practice space for that mission. People with disabilities are learning restaurant skills, earning a stipend (pay), and working together in a supportive place.

We are accepting applications for our training program for future events!

Support Inclusive Care in Durham
We are looking for sponsors, local businesses, and community members who want to help build a more inclusive local economy.

Your financial support for this event does more than pay our trainees for one night. It helps AKALAKA train more Certified Peer Facilitators. These workers guide and teach local families. Together, we can stop the loneliness that many people with disabilities and caregivers feel. We can build a care system that helps everyone work and thrive in our city.
